This year our For The Love Of Cocktails Meet The Masters of Mixology has a new face joining the distinguished team, Master Mixologist Salvatore Calabrese. We chatted recently with Salvatore in an exclusive Q & A session to learn about his cocktail creation methods, his participation in this year’s For The Love Of Cocktails and what inspired him to pursue mixology.
Q1: Where do you get the inspiration for your cocktails?
A1: Many sources, it can be the time of the year, an event or occasion, a place, a personality or an interesting ingredient that I might try and be inspired by.
Q2: What does being a Master Mixologist at this event (For The Love Of Cocktails) mean to you?
A2: I am honored to be asked, as this is the first time that I will participate. It is always a pleasure to meet the public and enthusiasts of mixology, and of course to showcase my bar and my style.
Q3: What is you favorite thing about Las Vegas?
A3: The great culture there surrounding the food and drink.
Q4: What is your favorite drink to make?
A4: A Negroni, which is my preferred cocktail to drink.
Q5: Being as well-traveled as you are, what is your favorite place that you have worked and why?
A5: London, because it is where I built my reputation.
Q6: What are you looking forward to most about this year’s event?
A6: Meeting new people.
Q7: Describe For The Love Of Cocktails in 3 words.
A7: Ask me next year!
Q8: What is your favorite bartending memory?

Q9: What made/inspired you to get into the Mixology field?
A9: Working in London in the 1980’s I gained the reputation for making the best Martini at the Dukes Hotel, and looking for new ways to expand my reputation I began to experiment with different ingredients and flavors.
Q10: Can you describe your typical work day?
A10: Every day is different. I am lucky enough to travel the world, but when I am in London, you will find me hosting at my bar, working with my team to give the clients a wonderful experience and developing new ideas. For example, we have just created a new menu called Salvatore Around the World inspired by my travels.
Q11: Can you give us your signature cocktail recipe?
A11: My signature drink is the Breakfast Martini, a modern classic popular throughout the world. It has texture and a bittersweet flavor from the marmalade.
50 ml Gin
15 ml Cointreau
15 ml Fresh Lemon Juice
1 Full Bar Spoon of Thin Cut Orange Marmalade
Pour all of the ingredients into a shaker, stir to dissolve the marmalade, add ice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Shred some orange peel on the top of the drink as a garnish.
